Comoros - Post-Kenneth Recovery and Resilience Project : Additional Financing
Overview & Synopsis
The objective of the Additional Financing to the Post-Kenneth Recovery and Resilience Project for Comoros is to support recovery and increase disaster and climate resilience of select public and private infrastructure in the areas affected by Cyclone Kenneth. The AF is being requested by the Government of Comoros to finance investments that are critical to strengthening the country’s overall disaster resilience. The situation is fragile, with recurring disasters leading to internal displacements and severe impacts on the livelihoods of a population highly dependent on farming for their food security. Cyclone Kenneth in 2019 and the 2024 El Niño-induced floods exacerbated the country’s vulnerability, with both disasters impacting the same geography. Recent flooding and landslides on the islands of Grande Comore, Anjouan, and Mohéli caused significant material damage to homes, roads, public electricity distribution services, and drinking water and sanitation facilities, contributing to the spread of the cholera epidemic. The initial Rapid Damage and Loss Assessment (RDaLA) conducted by the World Bank estimated the compounding effects of flood and cholera in the amount of up to 35.2 million dollars, in the seven most impacted sectors and 18 most affected villages. Recovery needs, with consideration for resilience building and for Building Back Better (BBB), were assessed at 53.6 million dollars.
