Overview & Synopsis

India’s first Regional Express Railway Line will be operated by a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), recently renamed as NaMo Bharat. This semi-high-speed train can travel at speeds of up to 180 km/hour, enabling commuters to cover 100 km in less than an hour. With fewer stops than a metro system, NaMo Bharat is specifically designed for intercity travel, offering faster and more convenient transportation. This system is part of a broader strategy to decrease reliance on road-based transportation. The National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) has undertaken a comprehensive study for the Integrated Transportation Plan for the National Capital Region (NCR), projecting mobility patterns for the year 2032. As part of this plan, eight rail-based rapid transit corridors have been identified to improve the region’s transport efficiency. In addition to rail infrastructure, the plan includes enhancements to the road network and related facilities. The purpose of the study is to develop a gender action plan to ensure that the improved accessibility and mobility benefits accrued from the RRTC project, are more equitable and shared by men and women.
