Student Safety Education Project: Project Description, Coordinator's Report, [and] Safety Units.
Overview & Synopsis
Several different provincial agencies in Alberta, Canada, cooperated in initiating a safety education project that was piloted in the County of St. Paul. The project tested the feasibility of integrating safety into the general curriculum; the usefulness of existing safety resources from different agencies; and a diagnostic approach to health education that was based on an assessment of students' skills, knowledge, attitudes, and values. During the project, two sets of inservice sessions were held for teachers in St. Paul. In addition, seven safety units, one topic for each grade from early childhood services to grade 6, were designed by elementary school teachers using L. W. Green's model of health education. Recommendations resulting from the project included calls for further revisions of the seven units by specialists in attitude change in order to make the attitude component of the units more specific, for additional field testing of the revised units, for the provision of teacher training in the area of safety education, and for the provision of instruction on safety education in chosen careers.
