Methodological Note : Analyzing Past Disaster Events to Inform a Gendered Guture Disaster Recovery and Reconstruction
Overview & Synopsis
This note presents a new database, developed to increase gender data availability for input to disaster planning, response, and recovery efforts. The database collates and synthesizes gender impacts, gender-specific recovery needs, and gender-related cost estimates gathered from Post-Disaster Needs Assessments (PDNAs) between 2010 and 2021. Two use cases are presented to showcase how the database could be used to improve gender considerations in disaster risk management, response, and recovery. The first case study compares gender-specific post-disaster data for Timor Leste with historical cases from other countries or events. Patterns, differences, or anomalies in gender-specific disaster impacts are explored, which can be used to inform and improve future disaster risk management strategies. The second use case draws on the database to develop a gender profile for Malawi. Looking ahead, this note proposes potential enhancements to the database, aiming to expand its analytical capabilities and improve data integration. These enhancements will allow for a more comprehensive inclusion of event and country-specific information, enhancing the overall functionality and utility of the database.
