Viet Nam : Transforming Teacher Education Over Three Generations - Case Study 3
Overview & Synopsis
The establishment of Đổi Mới in 1986 marked the beginning of significant changes in initial teacher education (ITE) in Viet Nam. Đổi Mới, which means “renovation” in Vietnamese, refers to a series of economic and political reforms initiated during the 6th National Congress of the Communist Party of Viet Nam. The reforms represented a major shift from a centrally planned economy, similar to the Soviet model, to a socialist-oriented market economy. As part of Đổi Mới, Viet Nam began addressing evolving educational needs by increasing the numbers of teachers, raising teacher education qualifications, and bridging the gap between theoretical and practical education for teachers. Further improvements to ITE included strategies to integrate continuous professional development (CPD), enhance institutional alignment between teaching support institutions, and introduce quality assurance mechanisms in ITE.
