Georgia Poverty and Equity Brief : October 2026
Overview & Synopsis
Georgia has achieved substantial progress in poverty reduction over the past decade, underpinned by sustained economic growth, prudent macroeconomic management, and expanding social protection. Between 2014 and 2024, GNI per capita more than doubled to US$6,535. The poverty rate at the upper-middle-income line (US$8.30/day, 2021 PPP) stood at 45.6 percent in 2024, down from 62.0 percent in 2018, though it remains elevated relative to Georgia's peers and its upper-middle-income classification. The prosperity gap narrowed from 5.3 in 2018 to 3.8 in 2024. The Gini index declined from 36.4 in 2018 to 33.9 in 2024. Poverty reduction over this period was supported by rising real wages, higher pensions, and an expanded social protection system, alongside macroeconomic stability.
