To promote discussion, the problems and potentials of adult education in museums are set forth in this book. Both historical and contemporary services to scholars, artists, nationals, and schoolchildren are considered. Essays treat the interplay of scholarship and education, the interplay of collection and education, factors affecting the scope of the educational programme, the philosophy of active education, the unique aspects of adult education, the principles of progressive self-education and the written word, progression and circulation in exhibits, guides and teaching styles, scheduling, attracting adults, and gauging success.
