Early Childhood Education in Bhutan: A Nation's Growing Commitment
Overview & Synopsis
Bhutan, rooted in its unique philosophy of Gross National Happiness, has made significant strides in Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD). This paper provides an overview of the development and current landscape of ECCD in Bhutan in the context of its history of education, especially highlighting the role of teacher education in enhancing the quality of ECCD in Bhutan. ECCD has grown into a national priority, with increasing enrolment, policy development, and institutional support. However, challenges remain, including inadequate facilitator qualifications, gender imbalance of facilitators, and limited inclusivity for children with disabilities. Innovations such as mobile facilitators and ECCD modules in teacher training, alongside a push for a home-grown pedagogy, reflect Bhutan's commitment to quality and culturally relevant early education. As the nation aligns its ECCD efforts with global commitments like SDG, its vision remains clear: to nurture children through quality education grounded in Bhutanese values and best practices.
