Zimbabwe - Renewable Energy Procurement Technical Assistance Project
Overview & Synopsis
The development objective of Renewable Energy Procurement Technical Assistance Project for Zimbabwe is to support competitive procurement of Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers (IPPs). The National Renewable Energy Policy (NREP, 2019) highlights the importance of women's participation in the renewable energy sector, aiming to enhance access, employment, and entrepreneurship through inclusive energy initiatives. It promotes gender diversity and support for female-owned enterprises as IPPs, recognizing their role in advancing equity and innovation. However, ZERA does not collect gender-disaggregated data of the registered IPPs - anecdotal evidence suggests that most IPPs are male-owned, indicating significant gender disparities. The project will be complemented by the ongoing World Bank Executed Zimbabwe Energy Sector Programmatic Advisory Services & Analytics (PASA) - Improving the Fundamentals of the Power Sector and Achieving Universal Access in Zimbabwe. This PASA aims to support the GoZ to develop and implement energy sector policies and strategies aimed at accelerating energy access, strengthening energy sector planning, as well as improving the sectorβs financial and operational performance.
