Leave No Teacher Behind
Overview & Synopsis
The education of prospective teachers is one of those academic pursuits that is vital to the national interest. Yet teacher education in the academy is under assault. Critics include influential school superintendents, scholars, public servants, and prominent business leaders. Their lack of confidence in teacher-education programs should be a major concern for trustees, especially because we are now at crossroads for college and university-based teacher education. In this article, the author describes the challenges to academic teacher education and discusses ways in which trustees can help determine the ultimate fate of teacher education as an academic enterprise by becoming leaders in reform.
