Career Education Preparation Needs in Rural or Small Schools.
Overview & Synopsis
The examination of career education preparation needs specifically for teachers in rural or small schools was conducted by teacher education faculty at Eastern Oregon State College and the faculty of a school district in rural northeast Oregon. Imbler School District, which opted for an infusion approach to career education rather than a separate program, has a faculty of 25, including administrators, counselors, and teachers, for grades K-12 with a student population of about 400. The report includes teacher preparation needs for career education as perceived by the teachers in the Imbler district, the inservice process used by that faculty to develop its career education plan for elementary and secondary levels, and a brief description of goals and activity development. Sample activities and guides for classroom use are included for each grade, with emphasis at the elementary level on career awareness, with specific activities detailed, and at the secondary level on competencies to be achieved, with suggested activities to achieve them. Career education activities at the elementary level are worked into one or more existing subject areas; at the secondary level, career education goals are assigned to individual subjects and grade levels.
