Unleashing the Power of Geospatial Analysis for Impact : The Need for Precise Project Geolocation Data
Overview & Synopsis
Precise project geolocation data is essential for the World Bank Group to deliver development outcomes at scale, measure impact, and manage risk efficiently. Yet most Bank-funded projects lack accurate location information, relying on coarse centroids defined at design, which constrains analysis, learning, and operational effectiveness. This gap forces teams into costly, error-prone georeferencing exercises and increases risks when applying AI tools to low-quality data. Establishing a centralized, standardized, and regularly updated geolocation dataset—with accurate GPS coordinates, appropriate metadata, and privacy safeguards—is therefore critical. The Geo-Enabling Initiative for Monitoring and Supervision (GEMS), hosted by DECDA, has supported over 1,400 projects globally.
