Citywide Inclusive Sanitation in Action : Lusaka Sanitation Project
Overview & Synopsis
This case study documents the Lusaka Sanitation Project as a pioneering application of Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) principles at scale. The project combined sewered and on site sanitation solutions to address service delivery gaps across the full sanitation chain, with a strong focus on peri urban, low income communities in Lusaka, Zambia. It highlights innovative approaches to demand creation, financing, utility reform, and private sector engagement, including performance based fecal sludge management and targeted subsidies. The experience from Lusaka offers practical lessons on institutional strengthening, behavior change, and sustainable financing to support equitable and safely managed urban sanitation services.
