Indonesia - Geothermal Resource Risk Mitigation Project : Environmental and Social Management Plan for Wapsalit Geothermal Project

Overview & Synopsis

The development objective of Geothermal Resource Risk Mitigation Project for Indonesia are to scale up investment in geothermal energy development and support the Borrower in its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the country. Some of the negative impacts include:Air Quality degradation; Emission release (H2S and CO2); Increase noise level; Soil contamination; Soil Erosion; increase water runoff; Surface water Quantity; Loss and Disturbance to Terrestrial Flora and Habitat; Roadkill; Disturbance to Aquatic Biota; and Ecosystem Services. Some of the mitigation measures include: Use well-maintained vehicles and equipment, routine inspections and preventative maintenance; Implementation of NaOH abatement at the wellhead to reduce H₂S concentrations; CO₂ monitored as part of the NCG profile; Use well-maintained vehicles and equipment, routine inspections and preventative maintenance; Implement a Waste Management Plan (WMP) as a specific management plan that will be developed prior to the construction phase and Hazardous Materials Management Procedure; Implement planned remedial and stabilization works early, including slope reshaping (where required), soil nailing, geomat installation, and hydroseeding/grassing/vegetation planting to rapidly establish surface protection; Installing diversion canals or berms at upper slopes to prevent upslope runoff entering cleared areas; Designing and operating the intake system to avoid excessive abstraction during low-flow conditions;No land clearing conducted beyond the approved plan; Conduct a pre-mobilization wildlife awareness briefing for drivers; Install sediment control measures such as silt fences or fiber rolls near water bodies; and Establish buffer zones around notable plant populations and habitats to protect from edge effect and erosion during land clearing activities.
