Europe and Central Asia (ECA) Risk Profiles : Ukraine
Overview & Synopsis
Ukraine's population and economy are exposed to both floods and earthquakes, with floods posing the greater overall risk, concentrated particularly in Kharkivs'ka province, which carries the highest relative and absolute flood risk in the country. Earthquake risk is comparatively moderate, with Krym facing the greatest relative exposure and Odes'ka bearing the largest absolute earthquake losses. Services dominate the national economy, with industry and agriculture contributing the remainder, and close to 70 percent of the population lives in urban environments. As observed across the region, there is a strong correlation between population concentration and GDP at the provincial level, meaning the most economically significant areas also tend to face the greatest disaster exposure.
