Tanzania - Transport Integration Project : Additional Financing
Overview & Synopsis
The development objective of the Tanzania Transport Integration Project for United Republic of Tanzania is to improve the safety, climate resilience and capacity of key road corridors and regional airports, improve the capacity of relevant transport sector institutions to plan for and manage the sector, and provide immediate and effective response to an eligible crisis or emergency. The additional financing responds to a financing gap created when resources were reallocated to the Contingent Emergency Response Component (CERC) to address the 2023–2024 El Niño floods and Cyclone Hidaya, and its objective is to replenish those funds to sustain implementation and results without altering project scope or implementation arrangements while updating the results framework to reflect emergency response and enhanced jobs measurement. The Bank will continue supporting upgrading and rehabilitation of approximately 510 kilometers of strategic trunk and regional roads on the Mtwara–Mingoyo–Masasi, Lusahunga–Rusumo, Rutukila–Songea, and Iringa–Msembe corridors with road safety and climate-resilient design features; upgrading of regional airports at Lake Manyara, Tanga, and Iringa including paved runways, navigation aids, safety and security enhancements, terminal improvements, and strengthened emergency response; and institutional support to operationalize a web-based road asset management system, a road accident information system, and procedures for climate-resilient road design, alongside skills development and gender inclusion initiatives with Tanzania National Roads Agency and aviation authorities. The project also consolidates CERC results that restored post-disaster connectivity nationwide through resilient reconstruction of bridges, culverts, drainage, and vulnerable sections. Expected results include reduced crashes per 100 million vehicle kilometers traveled, lower travel times and vehicle operating costs, fewer weather-related road closures, improved airport emergency response times, expanded access to transport services, and more and better-paid job equivalents with disaggregation by women and youth.
