Those convicted of homicide were hanged on the public gallows before being dissected under the Murder Act in Georgian England. Yet, from 1752, whether criminals actually died on the hanging tree or in the dissection room remained a medical mystery in early modern society. Dissecting the Criminal Corpse takes issue with the historical cliché of corpses dangling from the hangman’s rope in crime studies. Some convicted murderers did survive execution in early modern England. Establishing medical death in the heart-lungs-brain was a physical enigma. Criminals had large bull-necks, strong willpowers, and hearty survival instincts. Extreme hypothermia often disguised coma in a prisoner hanged in the winter cold. The youngest and fittest were capable of reviving on the dissection table. Many died under the lancet. Capital legislation disguised a complex medical choreography that surgeons staged. They broke the Hippocratic Oath by executing the Dangerous Dead across England from 1752 until 1832.

By pushing Descartes to more clearly explain the union of body and soul beyond the functioning of a ‘strong’ passion, namely sadness, Elisabeth wants Descartes to review his idea of the passions, and his understanding of the ‘theory of the four humors’. This chapter aims at showing that Descartes turns away from Galen’s theory of the humors, which he globally adopts in the 1633 Treatise of Man. With the shift in his conceptualization of the humors between this Treatise and the Treatise of the Passions (1649), Descartes analyzed more specifically the inner feelings, consciousness, and the passions, by considering that a man is not simply a body, but a psychophysical being, with a body and a soul.

The reason for this research are the differences of the bond stress-slip relationships between pullout, push-in and tension tie specimen. A general admitted bond stress-slip law is developed which bases upon analytical consideration. The new developed bond stress-slip law considers the three-dimensional stress state of concrete in front of the rib of the reinforcing bar.

The flow of literature from Sweden to France is unlike anything else. Canonized authors such as August Strindberg and Selma Lagerlöf have been surprisingly successful in translating into French. The same applies to later high-prestige literature by Torgny Lindgren and P O Enquist. French publishers were also among the first to discover the Swedish detective story writers. The rights to Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy were bought by a French publisher before the novels began to be published in Swedish. Children's literature, on the other hand, perhaps Sweden's foremost contribution to world literature, had a late breakthrough in the French book market. This also applies to Astrid Lindgren, the incomparably most successful of all authors translated from Swedish. Why did Swedish fiction receive this particular reception in France? This book describes how Swedish literature has been translated into French, with a special focus on the period after 1945. During this period, the number of editions of Swedish fiction in French has increased tenfold. Which translators, publishers and other actors have contributed to this development? How have they reasoned and acted to promote the interests of Swedish literature? What types of literature and authorship have been particularly successful? These questions are answered on the basis of comprehensive statistics based on the latest bibliographic lists. The book also discusses the theoretical conditions for this type of study. The leading researchers in world literature research - Pascale Casanova, David Damrosch and Franco Moretti - are related to a literary sociological study of the book's communities.

Wspomniana klauzula brzmi: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof („Kongres nie może wydawać żadnego prawa dotyczącego ustanowienia religii bądź zabraniającego jej swobodnego wyznawania”).

The book Fundamentals of Accounting for Business provides a comprehensive overview of the essential principles of accounting as applied in the business context. It begins by establishing the importance of accounting as the basis for informed decision making within organizations, contextualizing its relevance to financial management and tax compliance. Throughout the text, basic accounting methods are explored in detail, such as double entry, recording transactions, and preparing financial statements. The book also addresses the interpretation of these statements, facilitating the understanding of a company's financial health. The authors analyze the results obtained through practical examples and real cases, connecting theoretical concepts with everyday business situations. Finally, they conclude that a good accounting management is fundamental for the sustainability and long-term success of any company, highlighting that accounting knowledge is not only a control tool, but also a competitive advantage in a dynamic and demanding business environment.

Rights and the City takes stock of rights struggles and progress in cities by exploring the tensions that exist between different concepts of rights. Sandeep Agrawal and the volume’s contributors expose the paradoxes that planners and municipal governments face when attempting not only to combat discriminatory practices, but also advance a human rights agenda. The authors examine the legal, conceptual, and philosophical aspects of rights, including its various forms—human, Indigenous, housing, property rights, and various other forms of rights. Using empirical evidence and examples, they translate the philosophical and legal aspects of rights into more practical terms and applications. Regionally, the book draws on municipalities from across Canada while also making broad international comparisons. Scholars, policy makers, and activists with an interest in urban studies, planning, and law will find much of value throughout this volume. Contributors: Sandeep Agrawal, Rachelle Alterman, Sasha Best, Alexandra Flynn, Eran S. Kaplinsky, Ola P. Malik, Jennifer A. Orange, Michelle L. Oren, Renée Vaugeois. Afterword by Benjamin Davy
