This book brings together the papers presented at the symposium "Franche-Comté and the former Netherlands", held in Vesoul and Tournai in October 2006, which focused on political, diplomatic, religious and artistic aspects. A second volume should bring together the proceedings of another symposium currently in preparation, focusing on military, demographic and economic aspects. The aim of the conference was to study the links between Franche-Comté and the former Netherlands over a long period, from the marriage of Otto and Mahaut d'Artois (1285) to the Treaty of Nijmegen (1678). Twenty-two papers provide a wide range of insights into the political, diplomatic, artistic and religious influences and exchanges between the countries 'beyond' and the countries 'beyond'. The results of the research presented here have profoundly renewed historiography. Lucien Febvre himself wrote: "Thus, it was a very loose link that united the County to the Netherlands. Or rather, there was no link at all between these two countries". Everything now points to the contrary.

Peacebuilding and Armed Conflict: Reflections from Law and Advertising is an effort to integrate two fields which, despite having dissimilar objects of knowledge, converge in the study and understanding of essential issues within the Colombian context: armed conflict, peacebuilding, and transitional justice. Legal science, through normative developments, doctrine, and jurisprudence, has made important contributions to the characterization of the constitutive elements of armed conflict and to the strategies aimed at overcoming it and transitioning toward a peaceful society. Advertising, for its part, plays a predominant role through the construction of narratives that, on the one hand, make visible the agreements reached between the parties to the conflict including negotiated reparation measures and, on the other, influence public perception, as well as acceptance of or resistance to them.

The aim of the Special Issue is to discuss the main current topics concerning marketing for sustainable tourism with reference to territories (i.e., tourism destinations, protected areas, parks and/or natural sites, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, rural regions/areas, etc.) and tourism enterprises and/or organisations (i.e., destination management organisations, hospitality enterprises, restaurant enterprises, cableway companies, travel agencies, etc.). In destinations where natural resources are pull factors for tourism development, the relationships among local actors (public, private, and local community), as well as marketing choices, are essential to develop sustainable tourism products. To this end, the Special Issue encourages papers that analyse marketing strategies adopted by tourism destinations and/or tourism enterprises to avoid overtourism, to manage mass sustainable tourism (as defined by Weaver, 2000), and to encourage and promote sustainable tourism in marginal areas or in territories suffering lack of integration in the tourism offer. Special attention will be given to contributions on the best practices to manage territories and/or enterprises adopting sustainable marketing strategies.

For centuries it was normal to grow up in a Catholic or Protestant family in Germany. According to the 1970 census, over 93 per cent of the population belonged to a church, but by 2022 this figure had fallen below 50 per cent. Today, a multitude of small religious groups, ideological communities and spiritual movements make it difficult to keep track of a growing market. The authors of this alphabetically arranged compendium were or are employees of an institute for religious studies of the Protestant Church, which has been investigating changes in the religious landscape for decades. In addition to being open to dialogue with people of other faiths, they have also taken a stand against offensive forms of faith.

Worldwide, soybean seed proteins represent a major source of amino acids for human and animal nutrition. Soybean seeds are an important and economical source of protein in the diet of many developed and developing countries. Soy is a complete protein and soy-foods are rich in vitamins and minerals. Soybean protein provides all the essential amino acids in the amounts needed for human health. Recent research suggests that soy may also lower risk of prostate, colon and breast cancers as well as osteoporosis and other bone health problems and alleviate hot flashes associated with menopause. This volume is expected to be useful for student, researchers and public who are interested in soybean.

Copyright is criticised for doing a poor job of rewarding creators and promoting ongoing access to knowledge and culture. This empirically-grounded book shows how we can use copyright reversion (mechanisms for returning copyrights to their creators) to do a better job of both, weakening excessive corporate power along the way.

The artist Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and the writer Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) both convey in their work a sense of foreboding and confinement in bleak, ritualistic spaces. This book identifies many similarities between the spaces and activities they evoke and the initiatory practices of fraternal orders and secret societies that were an integral part of the social landscape of the Ireland experienced by both men during childhood. Many of these Irish societies modelled their ritual structures and symbolism on the Masonic Order. Freemasons use the term ‘spurious Freemasonry’ to designate those rituals not sanctioned by the Grand Lodge. The Masonic author Albert Mackey argues that the spurious forms were those derived from the various cult practices of the classical world and describes these initiatory practices as ‘a course of severe and arduous trials’. This reading of Bacon’s and Beckett’s work draws on theories of trauma to suggest that there may be a disturbing link between Bacon’s stark imagery, Beckett’s obscure performances and the unofficial use of Masonic rites.

The Faculty of Political Science of Florence – the oldest school of political and social science in Italy, founded in 1875 by Carlo Alfieri and named after his father Cesare – has a tradition of study that is widely recognised, even abroad, to which the cultural project of this series is related. The first book is dedicated to the research activity carried out by Luciano Cavalli and the profound traces that it has left on Italian and European sociology. Now Professor Emeritus, Luciano Cavalli taught and worked at the "Cesare Alfieri" for many years from 1966 on. Around his commitment as a "pioneer" of sociology in Italy he mustered an array of sociologists, active in different universities, many of whom have opened up new frontiers within the discipline and have successfully cultivated a dialogue with the other social sciences, as the contents of the book clearly illustrate. This extensive collection of essays offers a clear image of the fertile sociological work that burgeoned around the scientific commitment of Luciano Cavalli and was often generated by his own action of cultural stimulus. The three sections into which the book is divided – Portrait of an intellectual, The sociology of political phenomena and Sociological theory and social change – address issues of great relevance to the contemporary sociological debate. The rapport between the democratic construction of the modern State and the role and functions of the leadership, the relations between citizens and leaders, the various forms of the democratic institutional structures and the transformations of political culture are interwoven with the Neo-Weberian interpretation of the charisma theory that Cavalli masterfully proposed. Also particularly significant and topical are the critical reflections made by writers whose scientific itinerary has run parallel to that of Cavalli for decisive stretches, and who were and are bound to his teaching when they tackle arguments such as the changes in urban life, immigration and the problems of economic, political and social development in our times.

The anthology stands for critical-political and transformative social work. In twelve contributions in German and four in English, the authors discuss three overarching goals: affordable housing, an engaged society and an economy of solidarity. They look at problems such as poverty and the precarisation of working conditions and offer answers in a critical professionalism and in the voices of the addressees.

Compositional and functional elements of the innovative architectures by Brunelleschi, Alberti, Michelozzo, Sangallo, seen during its Florentine stay, became for Leonardo a field of experimentation for the development of architectural prototypes, interactions between buildings and urban surroundings, new parameters of functionality and hygiene which define the ‘city of Leonardo’. A city made not only of spatial configurations but, above all, of flows of matter and energy those configurations must support, in a game of water and people movements where each design operation recognizes the vital breath of territorial ecosystems.
