This book is open access and available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. It is funded by the European Research Council. Asking what does foreign occupation look like and how does occupation shape visual expression and cultures, this edited collection explores how the occupied and occupiers have responded to their circumstances through visual culture. Contributors study specific cases of foreign occupation from around the world and across the 20th century, discussing the similarities, links and points of contact which bring disparate examples of occupation into dialogue with one another. The intention is to illustrate how an emphasis on ‘the visual’ can help inform our understanding of occupation more broadly. Comprised of 12 core chapters and structured around 4 methodological and conceptual themes, this book adopts a consciously transcultural approach through which contributors examine the influence of specific cases, memories and legacies of occupation. Spanning Europe, Asia, the Middle East and elsewhere, the chapters also engage in a wider dialogue to reveal commonalities and points of comparison across political and temporal boundaries.

Comparative studies of mountain areas have long been at the core of the discussion about the relations between nature and culture as well as on environmental and social change. This volume searches for ways to develop further critical comparative perspectives in the study of cultures in mountain areas by drawing inter- and transdisciplinary links amongst anthropology, geography, folklore studies, montology, and global history. Drawing on examples mostly from the Alps and the Andes, but also extending to the global mountains, the authors explore socioecological environments, historical and political processes, borderscapes, demographic dynamics, forms of domestic organization, rituals, religiosities, and human-non-humanrelations.

Educational Leadership and Management in the Modern Era offers a global, future-oriented perspective on how leadership and management practices can transform educational institutions to meet the needs of the twenty-first century. The volume examines key themes such as social justice, equity, technological innovation, instructional leadership, and organizational change, emphasizing how effective leadership can foster inclusive learning environments, enhance institutional resilience, and promote innovation across educational settings. Drawing from diverse theories, methods, and cultural viewpoints, the book connects leadership theory and practice by exploring ethics, decision-making, digitalization, and capacity building. By incorporating insights from higher education and school systems in both emerging and developed regions, this collection offers a thorough understanding of the skills, values, and strategies that define successful educational leaders today. Aimed at researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, it serves as an essential resource for those aiming to improve leadership effectiveness, enhance educational management, and implement meaningful reform. Balancing deep concepts with practical application, Educational Leadership and Management in the Modern Era reimagines leadership with vision, empathy, and innovation in an ever-evolving educational landscape.

Driving through the Holland Marsh one is struck immediately by the black richness of its soil. This is some of the most profitable farmland in Canada. But the small agricultural preserve just north of Toronto is a canary in a coal mine. From Dismal Swamp to Smiling Farms recounts the transformation, use, and protection of the Holland Marsh, exploring how human ideas about nature shape agriculture, while agriculture in turn shapes ideas about nature. Drawing on interviews, media accounts, and archival data, Michael Classens concludes that celebrations of the Marsh as the quintessential example of peri-urban food sustainability and farmland protection have been too hasty. Instead, he demonstrates how capitalism and liberalism have fashioned and ultimately imperilled agriculture in the area. This fascinating case study reveals the contradictions and deficiencies of contemporary farmland preservation paradigms, highlighting the challenges of forging a more socially just and ecologically rational food system.

This work presents the development and application of high-speed fluorescent thermal imaging for quench analysis in high-temperature superconductors (HTS). Using a fluorescent coating, with a temperature-dependent light emission, temperature changes can be calculated over 2D surfaces. The technique uncovered peculiar transient effects in novel HTS tape architectures and also helped to verify and better understand hot spot development in both insulated and non-insulated, HTS–wound pancake coils.

From the sixth century BCE onwards there occurred a revolution in thought, with novel ideas such as such as that understanding the inner self is both vital for human well-being and central to understanding the universe. This intellectual transformation is sometimes called the beginning of philosophy. And it occurred – independently it seems - in both India and Greece, but not in the vast Persian Empire that divided them. How was this possible? This is a puzzle that has never been solved. This volume brings together Hellenists and Indologists representing a variety of perspectives on the similarities and differences between the two cultures, and on how to explain them. It offers a collaborative contribution to the burgeoning interest in the Axial Age and will be of interest to anyone intrigued by the big questions inspired by the ancient world.

Poland does not participate in the EPPO mechanism, but cooperates with OLAF. Therefore, this Polish EPPO/OLAF volume, introduced by Dominika Czerniak, discusses the specific attitude of Polish legislation towards the PIF acquis sector, Title V of the TFEU, the importance of Art. 587 (European Investigation Order) of the Polish Code of Criminal Procedure and the newly inserted Art. 615a. It also contains an analysis and compilation of the EU and Polish legislation on EU fraud offenses. These relevant laws are dealt with in the first chapter of this volume. The Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) and its national partners carry out investigative missions, which are the subject of the second part of the book. Dr. Dominika Czerniak acted as the publication’s national expert. While written in English, the volume includes footnotes that reproduce the original Polish legislation in the local language. Easily navigable with the help of visual symbols, it is designed as a quick reference tool for academics, students, practitioners and other interested readers.

How does Google Maps reorient our city travels? How do matching algorithms affect how we seek love? And how does artificial “intelligence” prompt how we think? Engaging these and similar questions, this open access book critiques Big Tech’s colonization of everyday life. Although #MeToo and Black Lives Matter would not have happened the way they did without so-called “social” media, these platforms are not designed for emancipation but to maximize data extraction. Inspired by the feminist rallying cry that “the personal is political,” Resisting Big Tech calls for a collective consciousness of how Big Tech’s increasingly personalized streams colonize our associations (how we wander in our bodyminds and how we cohere as groups). Articulating a degrowth perspective on Big Tech, the book argues the need to be much more vigilant for how the transhumanist ideology that drives corporations like Google, Meta, and OpenAI accelerates life, burning out people and the planet. Focusing on four domains of life—home, city, learning, love— Niels Niessen advocates for the de-Googling of life and the need to foster truly communal spaces, online but especially offline. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the European Research Council.
