Once a threatened migratory species during the 1950s, the Greylag goose is currently considered as being overabundant and causing significant problems, especially in northern Europe which hosts the majority of a nowadays sedentary population. Conservation actions, climate change and intensification of agriculture have had unexpected consequences: in seventy years, this species’ geography and annual calendar have completely changed. Culling operations have been introduced in some countries, upsetting French hunters who would rather like to harvest the species for an extended period, which the European Birds Directive does not allow. In such a situation, how can the conservation of this species be balanced against the prevention of risks for human activities? This book first describes the changes that occurred for Greylag geese in western Europe, then explains the biological foundations of the current legal regulation, and how an innovative adaptive management process has been introduced by the European authorities. This book is for managers, policy-makers and, more generally, anyone interested in wildlife. It aims at contributing to the national debate about Greylag goose management, through the provision of an up to date review of current scientific knowledge and recent political decisions regarding biodiversity conservation at large.

In 1798, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge were engaged in a top secret experiment. This was not, as many assume, the creation of a book of poetry. A book emerged, to be sure—the landmark Lyrical Ballads. But in Murder Ballads, David John Brennan posits that the two poets were in fact pursuing far different ends: to birth from their poems a singular, idealized Poet. Despite their success, such Frankensteinian pursuits proved rife with consequence for the men. Doubts and questions plagued them: What does it mean to be a poet if your work is not your own? Who is best fit to lay claim to a parcel of poetic property that was collaboratively crafted and bequeathed to a fictitious Poet? How does one kill a Poet born of one’s own hand? Blending critical examination with jocular playlets-in-verse featuring the authors of the two books in baffled conversation, Murder Ballads reopens a 200-year-old cold case that never received a proper investigation: Who was the first true Author of Lyrical Ballads, and how exactly did he die?

Invisible Genealogies is a landmark reinterpretation of the history of anthropology in North America. During the past two decades, theorizing by many American anthropologists has called for an "experimental moment" grounded in explicit self-reflexive scholarship and experimentation with alternate forms of presentation. Such postmodern anthropology has effectively downplayed connections with past luminaries in the field, whose scholarship is perceived to be uncomfortably colonialist and nonreflexive. Ironically, as the American Anthropological Association nears its one hundredth anniversary and interest in the history of the discipline is at an all-time high, that history has been effectively presented as removed from and irrelevant to the new generation. Invisible Genealogies offers an alternative, compelling vision of the development of anthropology in North America, one that emphasizes continuity rather than discontinuity from legendary founder Franz Boas to the present. Regna Darnell identifies key interpretive assumptions and practices that have persisted, sometimes in modified form, since the groundbreaking work of A. L. Kroeber, Boas, Ruth Benedict, Edward Sapir, Elsie Clews Parsons, Paul Radin, Benjamin Lee Whorf, and A. Irving Hallowell during the founding decades of anthropology. Also highlighted are the Americanist roots of postmodern anthropology and the work of innovative recent scholars like Claude Lévi-Strauss and Clifford Geertz.

The Torre is an ancient watchtower, (15th century), and is subject to Italian laws for the protection of the historical and cultural heritage. Located in the port of Livorno the Torre del Marzocco symbolizes the past rooted in port activities and its traffic. This contribution presents a project of NTSNA to redevelop and renovate ancient marine landscape of Marzocco Tower. The project aims to widen the entry channel to Livorno port, as a safety measure towards the secure access of the great ships of new generation to the industrial area of Livorno’s port.

This volume is dedicated to the Anthropological and Ethnological section of the Natural History Museum. First the historical journey of the collections is traced from the antique nucleus of the Medici to the foundation of the National Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology, when Florence was the capitol of Italy, and the discipline of anthropology was born. The second part illustrates the multivariate collections from all over the globe. They are a precious record of the past and present biological and cultural diversity of our species opening wide horizons that rigorously connect science to the many faces of human culture, including art. The third section is dedicated to current research and opens new prospectives on the significance of ethnological and anthropological collections due to new technology and in light of a new appreciation of the museum as a living “zone of contact”.

With the convergence of space, media and design, not only are design practices radically changing but so are the surfaces that need to be designed: digital maps enable an interface to the physical world and allow new forms of navigation and spatial experience. At the same time, internet companies as cartographers raise discussions about inequalities and hegemonic claims. This book introduces this field, outlines important influences, theories and approaches and uses current examples to explain how card-based interfaces can work. This basis also serves as an inspiration for a critical and experimental approach that is important for designers, practitioners and an audience interested in design.

This open access book provides a comprehensive analysis of the Maidan massacre in Ukraine. It uses a theoretical framework of rational choice, moral hazard, state- repression backfire, and Weberian ideas about rational action to explore the massacre. The book draws on publicly available videos, photos and audio recordings of the massacre in English, Ukrainian, Russian, Polish and other languages, along with several hundred individual testimonies and revelations from the Ukrainian investigation and a trial and its verdict. By examining which parties were responsible for the massacre, the book analyses its implications for not only Russia’s war on Ukraine but also political developments across the globe.

Grid converters increasingly affect power system operation due to the increasing share of renewable energy sources and less conventional power plants. This shift in power generation leads to converter-dominated weak grids, which show critical stability phenomena but also enable converters to contribute to grid stability and voltage support. This thesis presents critical parts of converter controls and describes models to assess their characteristics. These models are used to derive design criteria and dedicated stability analysis methods for grid converter controls.

Jahrhunderts.

A contemporary examination of what information is represented, how that information is presented, and who gets to participate (and serve as gatekeeper) in the world's largest online repository for information, Wikipedia. Bridging contemporary education research that addresses the 'experiential epistemology' of learning to use Wikipedia with an understanding of how the inception and design of the platform assists this, the book explores the complex disconnect between the encyclopedia's formalized policy and the often unspoken norms that govern its knowledge-making processes. At times both laudatory and critical, this book illustrates Wikipedia's struggle to combat systemic biases and lack of representation of marginalized topics as it becomes the standard bearer for equitable and accessible representation of reality in an age of digital disinformation and fake news. Being an important and timely contribution to the field of media and communication studies, this book will appeal to academics and researchers interested in digital disinformation, information literacy, and representation on the Internet, as well as students studying these topics.

The book focuses on the presentation of some basic figures of memory that are present in the twenty-six novels by the Yiddish writer Sholem Asch. This study shows how memory is crystallized in the experience of surrounding landscapes and nature, and particularly in the reality shaped by man: towns and cities, family, religion, festivities and everyday life, the world of dreams and ideas as well as the biblical and historical events to which the author refers. Asch tried to preserve the common memory as perceived by Jews but since the target readers of his works were both Jews and Christians, his work has had an impact on both the collective memory of his own people and the treasury of universal human memory.
