Incorporate the company. Get the visa that depends on it. Keep both long enough to stay. The Korean government publishes a fifty-nine-page English guide for investors. The D-8 subcategories that matter to an individual founder — D-8-1 for the capital investor, D-8-4 for the technology founder — do not appear in it once. It is written for an employee posted by a foreign corporation, with a legal department to handle the hard questions. If you are arriving alone to build a company, you are not in its pages. This book is for the other reader. It covers three subjects that are usually sold separately, because for an individual founder they are one process: incorporating a Korean company, the D-8 family of visas that depends on it, and the money the government offers a new company in grants, loans, guarantees, and tax reductions. What it answers How much you actually need to invest — and why the threshold is counted per investor, not per company What qualifies you without capital: patents, degrees, and selection into a government program Whether you need a Korean partner or a Korean director Whether a shared office or a home address will pass Which of the five company types under the Commercial Act is worth forming What the registry and the tax office each require, and in which order Which government grants, policy loans, and tax reductions a foreign-owned company can reach — and where the tax grid pays nothing at all What renewal examines when the first visa runs out Whether your spouse and children can come, and whether they can work Seven routes in the permanent-residency annex that connect to founding or investing, and the clock each one runs How it is built Every figure, deadline, document name, and legal proposition traces to a source: the statute itself, an enforcement decree, a Ministry of Justice manual or public notice, or a government agency's own guidance. Each is cited with the date the text was current. Korean document and institution names are given in Korean alongside the English, because those are the words the desk, the bank, and the registry will print. Amounts appear in the currency the governing text uses. Four diagrams map the sequences that are hardest to hold in prose, and an appendix indexes every source used. Where a rule lives in administrative practice rather than in any published text — a bank's account decision, an office's timing — the book says so and names the desk that decides, rather than presenting practice as rule. Who it is not for If you have a corporate legal department, the government's own materials will serve you reasonably well. This book is for the founder who is doing it alone. Rules in this book carry base dates, and several of them expire. Each expiry date is marked where it appears.
