The “Involution” of Communication Studies

Journal: Routledge eBooks • • Routledge

Abstract

The author examines the paradigm change from the Columbia School to the Chicago School in mainstream communication studies in the United States in this chapter. This change is a reflection of a tendency that is becoming more internalized and more limited in scope. The author also looks at how mainstream American writing lacks a global viewpoint and a historical context. Based on this, he promotes the fusion of life and research, stressing the relationship between individual experience and social institutions. To escape preconceived notions, he suggests approaching concepts from a global historical perspective and approaching problems imaginatively. Additionally, the author recommends that communication studies in our nation engage in an equal dialogue with Western literature while striking a balance between “indigenous research” and a “international perspective” based on mutual subjectivity.
